Four out of four for Wiebes

Lorena Wiebes celebrated victory in the Scheldeprijs for the fourth consecutive time. Charlotte Kool sprinted to second two and Italian Fidanza came third.

At 10:40, the women commenced their 4th edition of the Scheldeprijs on the Churchilllaan in Schoten. Under the drizzling rain, they embarked on a journey of 130.5 km. The peloton rode in closed order for a long time. After 50 km, Dutch rider Anneke Dijkstra (VolkerWessels) managed to break away alone from the peloton. She built up a lead of almost two minutes. 

At 39 km from the finish, young Wilma Aintila (Lotto Dstny Ladies) decided to begin the cross to Dijkstra. It took about 15 km before she was able to catch Dijkstra. With a lead of just over a minute, the leading duo entered the final local round.

In service of record-holder Wiebes, SD Worx-Protime opened up the throttle to maximum on the final passage on the Broekstraat. The duo’s lead at the front dwindled second by second and they were finally caught 1.5 km from the finish. For the fourth time in a row, there would be a sprint for victory in Schoten.

Team dsm-firmenich PostNL took the initiative. Barbieri led out the sprint for her team leader Charlotte Kool. Top favourite Wiebes came out of her wheel and sprinted to victory on the Churchilllaan, just as she did in the first three editions. Kool finished second which she also did a year ago, ahead of Fidanza(Ceratizit - WNT Pro Cycling Team).

With four consecutive wins in as many editions, Dutch rider Wiebes continues to build on her record in the Scheldeprijs.
